Markey's Rental & Staging: Des Moines in Demand!

The Markey's Des Moines branch office launched the month of June with three very different annual events, all within the first week!

Dam to Dam 20k Race - June 2nd 2012, Saylorville Dam, IA
Markey's has been involved with the Dam to Dam 20K Race for 14 years, providing various levels of sound systems  ranging from boom boxes and 70-volt systems to a complete band setup along the route of this very popular 20K race every year. Between the 20k and its companion 5k race, over 8,000 runners compete.

This year Markey's provided audiovisual support in the form of 5 boom boxes, 5  six-speaker music stations that played CD music as participants ran past,  complete set ups for 7 bands on the route, the finish line announcement sound system,  the 5K Start sound system and the  finish line band.  This event required 12 technicians split into 5 crews to cover the length of the route from near the 20K start to the finish line.

United Methodist Church’s Iowa Annual Conference - June 2-5 2012, Iowa Event Center (IEC)
Planning began several months pre-event, and one of the main challenges was providing an environment in the IEC's large halls that was conducive not only to worship and other traditional church rituals, but also for what is essentially a giant business meeting for 1,000+ people.  Markey's provided the following to overcome this challenge and make for a successful conference:

Staging:  Three stage areas were established, one for worship/business functions, the other two for musical groups.
Sound:  Markey's used a Vertec Line Array system with front fill speakers to cover such a large area and two primary mixers were used, a Midas 40 Channel Board and a Presonus 24 Channel mixer. 
Lighting and décor:   This was crucial in establishing the range of atmospheres needed, from sacred to business to celebratory.  A 60'x30' scrim was hung behind the stage onto which a Christie HD projector projected a variety of images created by the conference artist. 
Projection and Video: Two pairs of 15'x20' screens and Christie projectors were hung in the room.  Each pair contained an IMAG screen with close captioning as well as a screen for Power Point presentations, business agendas, Audience Response results, song lyrics and more.  This also allowed the conference to go paper-free for the first time, eliminating large packets of documents for each attendee.  Another important video concept was the use of a robocam during the ordination and "laying on of hands" for new Pastors. The robocam gave a birds-eye view of the kneeling new Pastors within the circle of other participants, allowing family and friends to share in this emotional moment.

World Pork Expo - June 6-8, 2012, Iowa State Fairgrounds
Markey's Rental & Staging was once again the official audiovisual provider to the World Pork Expo at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Held the first week of June each year, this international event caters to 20,000 attendees ranging from pork producers to the companies that service the pork industry. With over 500 vendor booths to support, and large classroom and meeting room services to provide, Markey's was on hand to provide audio, visual, lighting and technical support for this three day event.
