Science Night Out is
WonderLab’s annual gala to fund its “Connecting to the Community Fund,”
which makes it possible for low-income children and their families to discover
the world of science and learning at this hands-on museum. Markey’s has been the audiovisual partner for this
special event for seven years, and this year’s gala was interesting in that it
was in an outdoor venue, with plenty of ambient light to consider when choosing
projection and lighting options.
The event took place
September 5, 2014 at the Woolery Stone Mill, formerly a limestone mill that has
been renovated into an outdoor event space.
Seating for the main stage events was in the mill, and a tent was set up
adjacent to the space to hold the silent auction items and the staging for the
band. There were science experiments and
activities on the lower courtyard as well, for which Markey’s provided sound.
For the stage where the live
auction took place, Markey’s provided a 40’ truss rig, ground supported, with
(2) 6.75’ x 12’ Stumpfl screens. The screens were illuminated with 14k
projectors, chosen for their brightness which would combat the natural light
filtering into the venue. We rigged 4 lights into the superstructure of
the building to light the stage and add visual interest to the bar area. To
give a gala feel to this venue, Markey’s positioned 25 Chauvet Slim par 64 uplights
around the room to light the walls with color. To clearly project sound
in this open venue, we selected a 4-speaker sound system using JBL CBT 100 Mini
Arrays, 2 wireless microphones, and a Presonus 16 channel board
In the adjacent tent where
the silent auction items were displayed, Markey’s provided (20) Martin 410 uplights
to accent inside the tent and the exterior portions of the mill.
