The 2014 NCAA Convention was held this year in San Diego,
CA, January 15-18. It consisted of various events spread over three
venues: Hilton Bay Front Hotel, San Diego Convention Center, and Marriott
Marquis Hotel. Markey’s provided the audiovisual services and
equipment for over 100 meetings that included educational sessions, legislative
sessions, luncheons and receptions. We shipped 4 semi truckloads of gear
from our national warehouse in Indianapolis, IN to San Diego for this event,
our tenth convention with NCAA. Markey’s worked in partnership with
producer BI Worldwide months in advance to plan for this event.
A few highlights:
- There were business sessions that required
voting from 400 members, so Markey’s secured the Automated Response Systems for
that process and set up 11.3’ x 20’ screens, 14k Christie projectors and 12
wireless microphones to facilitate the communication and voting process.
- A new session added this year was the Division I
Dialogue, intended to give the membership a voice and provide insight into the
changes being made in the Division I governance progress. Because this
was a new and high-profile event, Markey’s planned far in advance to make this
first Dialogue a success.
- CBS Sportscaster Jim Nantz was the speaker at
the Keynote Luncheon, where he reflected on his long career covering sports.
Markey’s provided 16’ x 9’ screens and used 14k Christie projectors and two HD
cameras for the visuals, and lighting was accomplished via 6 MAC 700 profile
moving fixtures and 15 Martin Stagebars.
Coordinating the equipment and the personnel can be
challenging when the events are taking place in multiple venues at the same
time, but proper pre-event planning by the Markey’s team minimized the amount
of time spent relocating gear and staff over the course of the convention.
