Markey's Celebrates Equal Opportunity with the Indianapolis Urban League

The Equal Opportunity Day started with a workshop from the Immigrant Welcome Center presented by the executive director. Some eye-opening statistics include that there are 120 nationalities in Indianapolis and 8.3 percent of Indianapolis residents are foreign-born. It was estimated in 2014 that there were 124,772 immigrants living in Indianapolis and they helped create or preserve 5,740 local manufacturing jobs.

Through the Immigrant Welcome Center, there are 96 Natural Helpers from 32 countries who speak 46 different languages. They help new immigrants find health care, legal services, housing, jobs, and police and fire safety information.

The event workshop was followed by a luncheon recognizing many individuals and organizations making a difference in the community in regards to equal opportunity, civil rights and social justice. There were an estimated 700 people attending the 2017 luncheon featuring keynote speaker, Benjamin Crump.
