Over 5,500 Kiwanis members from all over the globe attended the Kiwanis International 2012 Annual Convention at the Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, June 28 - July 1, 2012. This was Markey's Rental & Staging's third year as the audiovisual provider for this particular event.
Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy, whose story was the basis for the movie "The Blind Side," were the keynote motivational speakers in the Opening Session, and Mary Matalin and James Carville, political consultants and commentators were the speakers at the Closing Keynote Session. Both sessions were in a room that had a low ceiling and columns, which posed a bit of a challenge. There was a need for seating with good sight lines to the stage and/or IMAG screens for the many thousands of attendees, so Markey's had to be creative about working in this room without using up valuable seating space. Markey's creative team utilized a CAD PC to map all gear positions in advance, enabling Kiwanis personnel to see in advance how the room would look. This also allowed Markey's crew to work efficiently on set up day.
The entire event was produced and displayed in high definition using the latest is DLP HD projection, Sony HD cameras and Barco HD switching systems. The concert audio system was all digital and incorporated all aspects of the entertainment for
Markey's also provided the audiovisual equipment needed for all education sessions, and had the pleasure of providing the lights, sound, and video for the featured Legends Concert, starring Grammy Award-winners Branford Marsalis and Aaron Neville.
While the Kiwanis International Convention was taking place, the Circle K International was also meeting for their annual convention at the Westin New Orleans. This convention was significantly smaller but no less impactful to their cause. Kiwanis Circle K members are on college campuses all over the US and other member nations. Markey's supplied their workshops, general sessions and dance party with equipment more tuned for smaller venues, once again showing our versatility and equipment diversity.
The work for Kiwanis didn't end in New Orleans! From there, Markey's traveled to the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista for the annual Key Club Convention July 4 - 8. Key Club is an international high school organization sponsored by Kiwanis International, and this was Markey's 12th year serving as audiovisual provider for this convention. Eden Sher of the TV show "The Middle" was the keynote speaker, and Justin Willman, magician and comedian, performed at the Recognition Session. The room used for these functions was not very large, but needed to fit 1,700 teenagers in the audience, as well as all the audiovisual production. This was accomplished with thorough pre-convention planning, creative set design and resourceful use of the backstage space. This was another example of Markey's working co-creatively with the customer to meet a challenge. Pumping music and flashing lighting for the kids is paramount for this event. Beyond the entertainment and business sessions during this convention, we also supported their two dance parties with all sound, lights and video.
